Breast Screening

The Gateshead Breast Screening Unit is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. It covers Gateshead, South Tyneside, Sunderland, Durham and Chester-le-Street.

The service screens women in their main breast unit at Gateshead’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital and also has units at Sunderland and Cleadon Park.  In addition there are also screening appointments held in mobile units at Blaydon, Jarrow, Durham and Chester-le-Street.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in the UK with more than 50,000 diagnoses a year. It is important to find breast cancer early. We know that the sooner breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the outcome is likely to be for you. If you are concerned about your breasts then you should contact your GP immediately.  Do not wait for a breast screening appointment. The Gateshead Breast Screening Unit is part of the NHS Breast Screening Programme. The unit offers breast screening to women from age 50-70.
